In the 1800’s, Geneva businessman Henri Dunant took a trip to northern Italy. On 24 June 1859, he arrived at the scene of the Battle of Solferino, one of one of the largest and bloodiest military battles of that century. Countless wounded and dying soldiers lay on the battlefield with no one doing anything to help them. Back in Switzerland he started The Red Cross, which eventually established standards for the treatment of wounded soldiers and prisoners.
